Developing Lifelong
Emotional Intelligence Tools:
Techniques for In-Sight
|
|
Though we do not test for emotional intelligence in classrooms, success in life depends greatly on our abilities in this realm. First and foremost students need a strong emotional intelligence to support them through the challenges of school and life with a sense of self, a connection to community and a global perspective. As Einstein so appropriately stated: “The primary purpose of education is to find what is of genuine value in life and then to have the courage to take those thoughts seriously.” This workshop is designed to provide tools to help students find what is of value in their lives and to continue to use these tools as a lifelong process for gaining insight and inspiration.

In this workshop we will learn techniques for addressing emotional intelligence using simple activities including music, symbols, art, and the Labyrinth. Chris Brewer holds a master’s degree in Music Therapeutics and will share ways to use music to facilitate student reflection and inspiration as well as using it as a tool for community celebration. In this work, Chris also focuses on the use of Robert Johnsons’ Active Imagination process and the interpretation of dream images.
Mandalas—known as “circles of the self” provide intriguing insight both to the drawer and the observer. We will review examples and make our own. Finally, the Labyrinth has been used around the world to help people find their path by providing a metaphorical “journey to the center.” We will make and walk our own labyrinth—helping us to find our own center so that we might give students courage to find value in life.
