Music Research Links


The Temple University Music Therapy Database is an excellent resource for Music Therapy references. It includes periodicals, book chapters, an index of Music Therapy Masters' Theses, a GIM Bibliography and Discography, research on assessment, and Qualitative Research in Music Therapy, Psychotherapy, Music Education and Arts Therapies. Also on this site are archives of the unpublished papers of Helen Bonny (GIM founder), Mary Priestley notes, and an excellent Links section to other Music Therapy-related websites.


The International Foundation for Music Research (IFMR) was founded in 1997 to support scientific research to explore the relationship between music and physical and emotional wellness, with particular attention to the elderly population, the impact of music making on at-risk youth, and music education and the effect of music and music making. IFMR also convenes scientists, educators and others around critical issues in music research and disseminates research through its publication, IFMR News, and various on-line research referral services and archives.


An excellent website for getting good solid research. MuSICA is based out of the University of California at Irvine - here's info from the website:

MuSICA currently provides all issues of MuSICA Research Notes. MRN is a newsletter of analysis and commentary on the broad field of research on music and behavior, including evolution, brain mechanisms, child development, perception, learning, memory, performance, health and related topics. The author of all material is Dr. Norman M. Weinberger.

MuSICA Research Notes was published in nineteen (19) issues from Spring 1994 through Summer 2001.

CAIRSS is a bibliographic database of music research literature in music education, music psychology, music therapy, and music medicine. Citations have been taken from 1,354 different journal titles; 18 of which are primary journals, meaning that every article ever to appear is included.


This comprehensive study of research into the 'other' values of music, the first of its kind, has been commissioned by the Performing Right Society from Professor Sue Hallam of the Institute of Education, London University. This site includes a wealth of research summaries, some of which have been reprinted here. Special thanks to Dr. Hallam for the right of reprint. Psychology of Music (ISSN 0305-7356) is the journal of the SEMPRE. The aim of the society is to provide an international forum for researchers working in the fields of psychology of music and music education, to encourage the exchange of ideas and to disseminate research findings.

The Music Research Institute

The Music Research Institute houses a collection of research papers, reports, articles and press cuttings about a whole range of aspects of music. To search this catalogue, just enter keywords. The entries have been put into categories (education, psychology, biology, neurology, composers, musicology, therapy, technology, sociology, general) which can be used as keywords. If you wish to acquire a copy (where copyright allows), email , quoting the reference number. The standard charge is £20 per entry. If however you are a student and are unable to afford the administrative cost, the MRI will support your studies by charging just the cost of photocopying and postage.

Website for Dr. Jeffrey Thompson about the use of sound and music in health. Includes resources and information about vibroacoustics.


The website for Physioacoustics in Finland, founded by the late Petri Lehokoinen. There is information on this site about the research and methods-development done by Lehikoinen.


Skille is one of the original designers of vibroacoustic equipment and there is information on his website about extensive work with physioacoustics. Although this is the address I get for Olav Skille's website from his site, I often get the message that it can't be found when I try to get there. If this happens to you simply type Olav Skille into the search function on the Tripod site that comes up (hopefully) and you will get a list of Skille pages-go to Skilles' HomePage and you're in!


Whole Body Sound located in the UK has information about vibroacoustic uses and resources. Dr. Gordon Dalgarno, chairman of the charitably-supported organization Enabling Through Sound and Music www.ETSAM.org.uk has worked extensively with vibroacoustics and the hearing impaired and people who are deaf. One study using background music with neurofeedback training for students diagnosed with ADD found significant increase in students' ability to self-regulate behavior and improve focus, social skills, and moods control while decreasing impulsivity.
